  • I remember when The Charlatans scored this album, many were expressively disgusted with them - didn't understand it then, still don't understand it now. Personally, 'Between 10th & 11th' was quite a statement for me, after 'Madchester' kickstart 'Some Friendly' which, despite a classic, is obvious of The Charlatans' youth soundcheck on The Stone Roses in both, sound and image.They did their best to become a respectable band nowadays, however the early days of The Charlatans remain more dynamic; and to an extent more experimental - 'Between' is a mixed affair of still-'Madchester' dialogues and something way more adventurous.For most fans up to that point, the group sounded lost without getting anywhere particular, but this album is a brave, welcome step away from 'Madchester' stereotypes provoked by countless imitators back then - ironically, which many seem to have never really cried over. And 'The Only One I Know' is definitely not the best song The Charlatans did, it is just a deserved hit - there is a difference....
