  • What an amazing compilation. "This Is The Sound Of House & New Beat" reminds me of such good times, back in 1989, when several young students (like me) used to listen to K7 tapes on their walkman during school classes. For most people outside of the underground scenes, it was probably one of the first opportunities to listen to New Beat and House music. Not by coincidence, this tracklist was released at the times when House & Acid House made a deep impact on Europe, affecting the local dance music, and that was (definitely) the case of the Belgian dance music. "Acid In The House" and "Jack To The Sound Of The Underground" were typical examples of New Beat 'second generation' tunes: the first one borrowed from Acid House the use of TB303 basslines (like “Cheebala” and “Acid Conflict”), and the second was Peter Slaghuis work based on Fast Eddie's "Jack To The Sound". “The Party” was a largely-played House tune worldwide. “Hey DJ! Give me a fat bass!” vocals could be heard everywhere! I remember very well listening it in places like the Joy Club in São Paulo, on Sylvain *Acidman* Justum’s walkman, who by the way introduced me to this selection for the very first time, or in secret DJ set tapes who reached everywhere (not to mention the large amount of venues in America and Europe whose decks professionals would include in their repertories). The same applies for the other tunes on this compilation, because at that time New Beat was known well enough across the Globe. A propos, this tracklist was so significant that I remember having access to very underground Belgian tapes at the French Lycée I used to study (containing “The Party”, “Acid In The House” and “Rock To The Beat” (this one sampled from the original version of the Detroit Techno duo Reese & Santonio), all three part of “This Is The Sound Of House & New Beat”. Some of the classic producers from the nineties were equally present in this tracklist with their original tunes or through their samples. These electronic heads became well-known after the New Beat era, such as Cisco Ferreira as ‘Ghentlon’ (who also sampled Reese & Santonio’s “Rock To The Beat” main synth lines in “Cheebala”. ‘Space Opera’ was another project made of emerging talents, composed by guys such as the Techno producer CJ Bolland, Renaat Vandepapelière (which owned of the R & S empire), and Ferreira himself. At the same time, it was the top of Nickkie Van Lierop's journey as diva of the New Beat scene, also known as ‘Miss Nicky Trax’ and part of ‘One O One Electric Dream’ with Praga Khan, Oliver Adams (who both created with Nikkie Channel X two years later) and Chris Inger (of the New Beat projects ‘Nasty Thoughts’ and ‘Major Problem’).
