I'm usually avoiding records featuring (often annoyingly) dreamy, mellow, seductive female vocals, especially due to the computerised "sexiness" that is so omnipresent in most of what is tagged "modern" r'n'b - its commercially expendable image in the last 20 years which on the other hand is dangerously bordering (if not entirely crossing into) porn, rather than accentuating the erotic and the sensual. With FKA Twigs, things are audibly and obviously - different. And the equivalent of "mindfuck" - in the broadest sense of the word "sensual". Her videos and lyrics are so explicitly sexual, but where she appears as if to be blown off into the vulgar territory, the performance appears so strong that it leaves you gasping for breath. Although her mellow vocal deliveries might make you feel pretty dizzy at times, she does pull it off tremendously and to great effect, fully in control. Of course, the main ingredient to this success is the FKA's personal taste for weird music that's adding to the pleasant confusion, her voice blending nicely with the often spliced-up and burbling electronics that defy categorisation - turning "seductive" and "sensual" into "threatening" and "challenging". Sounds too good to be true, but it is.
